One freshman stood out for Alabama during its first spring scrimmage.

Wide receiver John Metchie scored two TDs Saturday, per AL.com’s Matt Zenitz. Metchie, the early enrollee from Hightstown, New Jersey, was rated a 4-star prospect and ranked as the nation’s No. 40 overall receiver and the state’s No. 6 overall prospect, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. He exploded onto the recruiting scene somewhat late.

Just what Alabama is lacking, right? Well, interestingly, the Tide return four potent receivers in Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith and Henry Ruggs. Jeudy led all receivers with 68 catches for 1,315 yards and 14 TDs.

Metchie has an interesting story. He was born in Taiwan and moved to Ghana. He then relocated to Canada, where he spent much of his life, according to the Toronto Sun.

He was the only receiver Alabama signed during the 2019 recruiting cycle.

You can watch Metchie’s high school highlights below to get a feel for his play-making ability, as he racked up more than 3,800 yards receiving and rushing in high school with 42 TDs:
