Heading into a crucial third season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is shuffling his offensive staff.
In the aftermath of Nick Sheridan moving on to become the offensive coordinator at Michigan State, Bryan Ellis is moving from his role coaching tight ends to working with the quarterbacks for Alabama, according to a report from FootballScoop.
Ellis, 37, brings plenty of experience to his new role, having played quarterback at UAB from 2007-2011. Ellis has also been a quarterbacks coach at USC (2018), offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Western Kentucky (2019-2021), and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Georgia Southern (2022-2023).
In 2017 at USC, Ellis additionally coached first-round selection Sam Darnold as an assistant.
Alabama’s offense ranked 10th in points per game and 11th in yards per game in the SEC this season. Alabama struggled at second-to-last in the SEC in rushing yards per game. However, Alabama ranked second in passing yards and fourth in passing yards per game in the conference.
Alabama improved to 11-4 in DeBoer’s second season at the helm, qualifying for the College Football Playoff. Alabama defeated host Oklahoma and then lost to Indiana in the Rose Bowl.
