Alabama QB’s portal decision a win for Kalen DeBoer ahead of first season

Alabama QB Ty Simpson would draw significant interest if he entered his name in the transfer portal. Simpson, though, is reportedly staying put in Tuscaloosa.
Ryan C. Fowler of Tide 100.9 shared late Monday that Simpson will not explore transfer options as the spring window for entry into the portal opens for undergraduates.
Sources tell me that Alabama QB, Ty Simpson will be back in the Fall for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Few would have faulted Simpson for entering the portal. His NCAA eligibility clock to play 4 seasons in 5 years began in 2022.
Out of Martin (Tennessee) Westview, Simpson was a 5-star recruit, rated the No. 3 QB on the 247Sports Composite. It’s hard to remain humble as a 5-star prospect when there’s endless hype about college serving as a 3-year pit stop before the NFL Draft.

Instead, Simpson enters Year 3 of his career as a redshirt sophomore yet to make a collegiate start and adjusting to a new head coach. Things have certainly not gone as Simpson planned, but he appears to be sticking it out in Tuscaloosa.
While things may be moving slower than expected for Simpson, he’s coming off an impressive spring and strong A-Day showing.

A depth-chart win for DeBoer
In the college football world, we hear all the time about coaches “re-recruiting” their roster to stay put instead of transferring. Simpson’s decision may not get any public fanfare, but it’s a notable win for Kalen DeBoer.
In the transfer portal era, experienced backups are hard to come by, as many seek starting opportunities elsewhere. Simpson has played in 10 games, notably leading the Tide to 17 unanswered points in the closer-than-expected USF game last season.
Alabama entered DeBoer’s first spring with 4 quarterbacks on the depth chart. With Simpson and incumbent starter Jalen Milroe on board for fall, all eyes turn to Dylan Lonergan and Washington transfer Austin Mack.
