Anonymous SEC coach explains why Lane Kiffin ‘isn’t considered an elite coach’

Every year around this time, Athlon Sports releases its annual article on anonymous SEC coaches talking about conference foes. There are usually some interesting nuggets in there, and this year was no exception.
In the crosshairs this year was Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin. He’s a polarizing name among fans and media members, and last year was difficult to parse for the Rebels.
Yes, the Rebels went 10-3 on the season, but there was certainly disappointment in the fan base that Ole Miss didn’t make the 12-team Playoff.
One anonymous SEC coach credited Kiffin for scouting the portal well, but added that Kiffin’s inability to consistently win important games is why he’s not considered “elite”:
They’re one of the best programs in the country at evaluating the portal, and they’ve done a very good job integrating that talent and winning right away, but this is still an inconsistent program. The loss at Florida last year is an example of why [Lane] Kiffin isn’t considered an elite coach.
Now that the Rebels have lost QB Jaxson Dart to the NFL, along with several other key players on both sides of the ball, it’ll be tough for them to make the Playoff.
Can Lane Kiffin pull it off? If he makes the 12-team field this year, maybe it will be time to start considering him “elite.”
