ESPN is now adjusting to having a second broadcaster out of an in-stadium role because of COVID-19. Kirk Herbstreit has said he will call the College Football Playoff games remotely after a positive case, and now former Alabama QB Greg McElroy has announced similar news.
McElroy was set to call the Cotton Bowl tonight between Florida and Oklahoma, which is on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET. He was also set to be on the radio broadcast of the Rose Bowl between Alabama and Notre Dame. But now both of those are off. Though he said he’s “disappointed,” he hopes to be back soon.
McElroy was hired at ESPN in 2014 as an analyst for SEC Network, according to his ESPN bio, and teamed up with Marcus Spears for the launch of “Thinking Out Loud,” which the duo co-hosted for two seasons.
McElroy was an Alabama quarterback from 2007 to 2011 when he led the Crimson Tide to win the 2010 BCS National Championships. He had previously ushered the Crimson Tide to an SEC Football Championship title and was named MVP (2009).
This is my favorite week of the year. I was so excited to head home, to DFW, to call the @CottonBowlGame and then to be on the radio call for @rosebowlgame.
Unfortunately, I tested positive for COVID.
I’m disappointed, but I feel good and hope to be back soon. Appreciate y’all!
