Another Ohio State QB enters NCAA transfer portal

Georgia transfer QB Justin Fields is now Ohio State’s clear-cut starting QB, thanks to Matthew Baldwin exploring a transfer.

Fields battled Baldwin this spring for the starting QB job, and despite struggling in the spring game (4-of-13 on passing attempts), Fields appears to have overtaken that role. That leaves Baldwin exploring a transfer to another program.

It’s worth noting that the Buckeyes also lost QB Tate Martell to a transfer to Miami earlier this off-season. Baldwin would be the second.

Interestingly, OSU head coach Ryan Day said Saturday following the Buckeyes spring game that he expected Fields and Baldwin to battle for the starting job through fall camp; however, that looks unlikely at this point.

Letterman Row’s Austin Ward originally broke the news regarding Baldwin exploring a transfer, but Ward added that “multiple sources familiar with Baldwin’s thinking attributed the decision more to a desire to be closer to home rather than a concern about future playing time or any issues with the coaching staff.”

With Baldwin potentially leaving, that only leaves two other QBs behind Fields on the depth chart: Chris Chugunov and Danny Vanatsky. Both are a major step down from Fields at this point.

UPDATE: Baldwin released a statement on Twitter confirming the news.
