Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will allow even more fans for the Alabama-Miami game on Sept. 4.
Gary Stokan, the president of the Peach Bowl, told Michael Casagrande of AL.com that overflow seating sections have been opened to accommodate demand. The stadium has a seating capacity of 71,000. With the overflow sections open, capacity expands to 75,000.
“This is going to be one of the tougher tickets that we’ve had,” Stokan told AL.com. “We’ll have a sell-out for sure and it’ll be an electric crowd, that’s for sure.”
Alabama opened its 2019 season against Duke in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The announced attendance for that game was 71,916 people, per AL.com.
The recent rise in COVID-19 cases linked to the delta variant has led to some concern in the college football world about limited capacity for college football games again in 2021. Ole Miss and Louisville also play in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Monday, Sept. 6.
“Well we’re talking through all the protocols with the four teams this week,” Stokan told AL.com. “Everybody’s waiting as long as they can just to make sure that they have full knowledge of where the variant is and coronavirus. And then we’re talking to Mercedes-Benz (Stadium) as well, learning what they’re doing with Atlanta United and the Falcons since they have a preseason game. So those, those conversations are going on now.”
