Florida coach Jim McElwain revealed during a pre-spring press conference on Tuesday that receiver Antonio Callaway and quarterback Treon Harris haven’t been with the team since January and won’t work with the club during the spring.
Later, it was confirmed that the two have been suspended indefinitely.
On Friday, Gainesville’s Huntley Johnson issued a news release stating that Callaway’s suspension was handed down on Jan. 27 for a violation of the UF Student Code of Conduct, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson.
Furthermore, Johnson says Callaway should be reinstated because there is no basis to allegations against him, although there’s no word on what the allegations are. That comes after his office supposedly investigated the allegations in early December.
“There is no good reason why this investigation has not been closed,” Johnson wrote. “This allegation has no merit.”
Callaway is expected to be the Gators’ top offensive playmaker next season after setting the school record for receiving yards by a first-year player with 678. He also led all FBS freshmen last season, and all SEC players regardless of class, by averaging 19.4 yards per catch.
There’s no indication as to whether Callaway and Harris’ suspensions are related in any way.
