Auburn fans blast officials for questionable calls in Oklahoma game
Auburn fell to Oklahoma 24-17 on Saturday night in Norman, taking its first loss of the season.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, officiating decisions played a big role in the outcome of this game.
First, Auburn lost a scoop-and-score touchdown after it was ruled Oklahoma receiver Isaiah Sategna failed to complete a catch. On-field officials ruled it a catch-and-fumble for Sategna, but that decision was overturned by the replay booth.
Later in the game, replay officials overturned what was originally called dropped pass from Sategna in the red zone into a long reception. Sategna appeared to have control the ball, but it was knocked from his grasp by an Auburn defensive back as he was tackled out of bounds. That completion, as it was ultimately ruled, set up what proved to be the game-winning touchdown for Oklahoma in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Sategna was also involved in a different play that is perhaps the most controversial of them all. Sategna put Oklahoma on the board with a 24-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. However, it came on a “hide-out” play that should have resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Sooners, according to ESPN rules official Matt Austin. Sategna appeared to act as if he was subbing out of the game in-between plays before lining up on the edge of the field near Oklahoma’s sideline. He was unmarked by Auburn’s defense on the play as a result of the deceit.
Even with all of that misfortune, Auburn was still in position to potentially win this game on its final drive of the game. Here’s some of the reaction from Auburn fans:
