Auburn’s College World Series run comes to an end vs. Louisville after lengthy rain delay

Nearly 24 hours after Tuesday’s College World Series elimination game between Auburn and Louisville started, it came to an end. A lengthy rain delay lasted about 20 hours before play was able to resume between the Cardinals and Tigers.

Louisville led 4-1 heading into Wednesday’s action, and each team scored once to make it 5-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. Then, Auburn managed to load the bases with two outs.

However, Louisville closer Michael McAvene managed to work out of that jam, ending the Tigers’ last major scoring threat. Conor Davis hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Louisville went on to win 5-3 to avoid elimination.

Davis had two doubles and a home run in the game to lead the Tigers offensively, but the rest of the lineup didn’t do much against the Louisville pitching staff.

The Tigers struggled down the stretch in the regular season, so not many expected them to make it this far. Yes, the two losses in Omaha were disappointing, but this program is heading in the right direction under coach Butch Thompson. With several key players returning to Auburn next season, it’ll be fun to watch how they fare in the SEC in 2020.
