Austin Armstrong is set to leave Florida for another opportunity, according to a report.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke that news on Friday morning, noting that Armstrong is working toward a deal to become Houston’s next defensive coordinator.
Armstrong has been Florida’s defensive coordinator for the past 2 seasons. Prior to joining the Gators, he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Southern Miss. Armstrong is certainly on the younger side compared to many of his contemporaries — his first on-field coaching role came in 2020 when he was named the linebackers coach at Louisiana.
After the 2023 season, Billy Napier brought in a more experienced coach in Ron Roberts to serve as Florida’s co-defensive coordinator. Florida’s defense improved from 13th in the SEC in 2023 to 9th in 2024 in yards per play allowed.
If Armstrong make the move to Houston, he will be joining a program entering Year 2 under Willie Fritz. The Cougars are coming off of back-to-back 4-8 seasons to begin their time in the Big 12, so Armstrong will have his work cut out for him if they intend to get back to previous heights reached by Kevin Sumlin and Tom Herman.
