Anthony Averett was often overshadowed in his own secondary at Alabama.

It’s early, but the rookie cornerback is already standing out at Ravens training camp.

Averett, who was drafted by Baltimore in the fourth round, made a nice first impression on his new defensive coordinator.

“He’s really jumped out since our OTAs and minicamp,” Ravens defensive coordinator Don ‘Wink’ Martindale said of Averett. “He’s come back ready to go. He’s done some good things.”

What are some of those good things? According to SB Nation Ravens reporter Kyle Barber, Averett got involved in all phases during a practice last week.

Averett was appreciative of the kind words from his new coaching staff.

“From any coach, it’s a blessing to hear anything like that, anything positive,” Averett told the Baltimore Sun. “Camp is definitely tough. But I mean, I’m keeping my head down and staying in the playbook.”

Averett, who had 48 tackles and 4 tackles for loss as a senior in 2017, was reunited with former Alabama cornerback Marlon Humphrey in Baltimore (along with 3 other former Alabama players). It was Humphrey who was the first-round pick and is considered one of the favorites to start at cornerback.

The opportunity for Averett to stand out even more will be next Thursday when the Ravens play their first preseason game.
