Much has been said about the plans for a vaccine and even rapid-testing and how it could lead to a strong control of the coronavirus.
However, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said get used to dealing with the virus for a long time, at least that’s the opinion of scientists he’s talked with recently.
“The scientists we’ve talked to have told us to expect for this to extend into two years,” Bowlsby said, per Dennis Dodd and was asked about the Pac-12’s rapid-testing plans. “I don’t know if there is a panacea.”
Testing should improve by the end of the year, but at the moment, several conferences are testing three times per week, including Fridays before games.
As conferences across the country react to and handle the pandemic differently, the Big 12 is following its experts’ opinion.
“We feel like we’ve been given the best advice we can get … We’re far from declaring that we know more about the virus than anybody else,” he said.
Bowlsby is cautiously optimistic, but guarded against problems ahead with regard to availability of tests and costs.
“There are a number of things that could cause us to get off the rails,” he said.
