It’s been 20 years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana.

In recognition of that anniversary, Tulane requested permission to wear white jerseys against Northwestern on Saturday in its season-opener. In 2005, Tulane’s football team wore white jerseys in its first game after Hurricane Katrina.

However, Northwestern reportedly denied the Green Wave’s request to wear their road white uniforms at home on Saturday.

After the game, which ended in a 23-3 win for the Green Wave, Tulane coach Jon Sumrall confirmed that Northwestern forced Tulane to wear green jerseys instead. He said the decision by Northwestern was disrespectful to the city of New Orleans.

“When you disrespect the city of New Orleans, you’re going to run into it,” Sumrall said. “I’m not trying to be a jerk but don’t disrespect the City of New Orleans.”

Rather than allow Tulane to wear white on Saturday, Northwestern donned its white jerseys instead. Quarterback Preston Stone threw 4 interceptions and the Wildcats averaged just 3.8 yards per play in the loss.

LSU is also set to honor all those who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina this season. The Tigers will wear a 20th anniversary helmet sticker when they go on the road to face Clemson on Saturday night.
