Biggest CFB upset of the season? Previously winless Kennesaw State hands Liberty its first loss

One of the biggest upsets of the college football season happened on Wednesday night, and it even has College Football Playoff implications.

Liberty went into Kennesaw, Georgia with a 5-0 record. Kennesaw State entered the game with a record of 0-6. The Owls, 27-point home underdogs, pulled off a shocking 27-24 upset. It’s the first time in over 20 years that a team with a record of 0-5 or worse beat a team 5-0 better.

Adding to the significance, it is Kennesaw State’s first win over an FBS team. The program launched in 2015 at the FCS level. After years in the Big South (2015-21) and Atlantic Sun (2022), Kennesaw State was an FCS independent in 2023 before joining Conference USA for 2024.

Wednesday’s outcome from Georgia has some CFP implications. The 12-team Playoff features the 5 highest-ranked conference champions and 7 at-large bids. With only 4 Power conferences, at least 1 Group of 5 champion is going to make the CFP. Liberty was in the mix for a Playoff spot as an undefeated Conference USA squad. Losing to a previously winless team, though, almost certainly removes Liberty from the picture.
