Year 1 of the Bill Belichick era is about to kick off in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the legendary NFL head coach has announced who will be his starter under center in his first season at the helm of the Tar Heels program.

Belichick announced that former South Alabama Jaguars’ QB Gio Lopez will be the week 1 starter for the Tar Heels when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs at home on Monday. The team was quick to share the news on social media.

The sophomore gunslinger made the move to North Carolina this past offseason via the transfer portal and has been viewed by many as the odds-on favorite to land the job since spring camp.

Lopez racked up 3,651 total yards and 31 total touchdowns across his two seasons under center for South Alabama. He’s mostly known as a passer, but does have the ability to pick up some serious yardage on the ground if the opportunity presents itself.

Now, he’ll be looking to bring the same dynamic athleticism he displayed for the Jags to the Tar Heels’ offense, and this time he’ll be under the tutelage of one of the greatest minds in football history.
