The walls appear to be closing in faster and faster around embattled Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier, as each week could very well end up being his last at the top of the historic SEC powerhouse.

Florida’s offense in particular has been the main driver of the Gators’ futility so far in 2025, and Napier himself shoulders more of the blame for the team’s sputtering attack than anybody else, given that he is the play caller for Florida.

Given how hot his seat has become over the past few weeks, many have been calling for Napier to hand over his play-calling duties to a designated offensive coordinator, so that he can focus all his attention on his other responsibilities as a head coach.

Despite these calls, however, Napier has remained steadfast in his commitment to calling the plays for the Gators’ offense in Week 6 against the No. 9 Texas Longhorns, and he broke down why during his Monday press conference.

“It’s year 8 for me and I think it’s the way that we’ve done it,” Napier said. “It helped us get here. There’s a lot of guys that are still doing it, too… you’re always evaluating what’s best for this team.”

It’s clear that Napier is relying on his play-calling prowess to save his tenure in Gainesville. Whether or not he can lead the Gators to an upset of the Longhorns could mean the difference in buying himself a few extra weeks to prove his worth and putting the final nail in his own coffin at Florida.
