Bob Stoops is one of the many analysts high on No. 5 Georgia heading into the 2021 season.
The former Oklahoma coach has joined FOX Sports’ “Big Noon Kickoff” show. On a recent preseason show, Stoops discussed why he isn’t picking Alabama to repeat as national champion and likes the outlook for Kirby Smart’s squad.
“The only reason is if you look at Alabama and Coach Saban and all the championships they won, they usually do it every other year,” Stoops said, per 247Sports. “So I’m banking on the odds, you know, losing some of the coaching staff, eventually, it’s going to catch up, losing eight All-Americans. So at some point that gives you a little bit of a hiccup.
“And I believe Georgia, with JT Daniels back — they played so well once they named him the starter [at quarterback], he completed over 300 yards a game and they averaged near 40 points a game — so that’s going to make a big difference. And I also read where they’ve got 19 former five-star recruits that are starting. Their recruiting the last 3-4 years, I think they were number No. 1 in the country, No 3 in the country, and No. 1 in the country. So you know that’s a lot of talent to match teams like Alabama, Clemson, OU as well. So I think Georgia would be one to be poised to do it all or have a chance to.”
Stoops’ point about Georgia having the talent to match a team like Clemson gets put to the test on Saturday when UGA faces Dabo Swinney’s Tigers who are ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25.
