Brian Kelly discusses LSU’s failures on offense in loss to Vanderbilt
LSU coach Brian Kelly talked through some of LSU‘s shortcomings in its loss to Vanderbilt at his postgame press conference.
The Tigers’ offense has been an issue throughout the season, and that was the case once again on Saturday afternoon. LSU averaged 6.6 yards per play, but struggled to finish drives with touchdowns. The Tigers attempted 4 field goal on the day, making 3.
The lack of efficiency on scoring chances is what ultimately doomed LSU in a 31-24 loss to Vanderbilt.
“The offense had mustered some things offensively that we had been lacking, but when our defense made a couple of stops, we couldn’t turn those into positive possessions,” Kelly told reporters after the game. “Those 2 (fourth-quarter) drives in particular, but more importantly, it was cashing in on first-and-goal from the 1. You’ve got to score a touchdown there.
“It is what it is. We could pick a couple of plays. The bottom line is we didn’t score touchdowns, we kicked field goals, and we didn’t play well enough defensively to give us enough possessions to win the game.”
LSU’s only touchdowns on the game came on explosive plays. Garrett Nussmeier threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Zavion Thomas and a 24-yard touchdown pass to Trey’Dez Green. Aside from those 2 throws, Nussmeier managed just 139 passing yards on 26 other attempts (good for just 5.3 yards per pass attempt).
LSU will have to adjust quickly with a matchup against Texas A&M on the schedule for next week in Baton Rouge.
