Brian Kelly and LSU are still negotiating the buyout terms of Kelly’s contract in the aftermath of Kelly’s firing as head coach.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Brian Kelly will “continue receiving his contractual compensation from LSU at roughly $800,000 monthly”. Dellenger also reported that LSU and Kelly will continue “working toward an agreement” on the $53 million buyout, but Dellenger said that a resolution on the buyout terms “could be weeks or months away.”

Saturday night’s blowout loss at Death Valley at the hands of No. 3 Texas A&M was the last straw for Kelly, whose Tigers fell to 5-3 overall and just 2-3 in the SEC. LSU was actually leading at halftime, but the Aggies scored 35 straight points in the second half to send the home fans home early. Some home fans stuck around though just to chant “Fire Kelly!” as the coach was coming off the field.

Less than 24 hours later, those fans got their wish, as Kelly was let go after leading the Tigers since the 2022 season. Kelly went 34-14 at LSU, which includes a 19-10 mark in the SEC. The Tigers won 3 straight bowl games under Kelly, but they never played in the kind of postseason games that he was brought to Baton Rouge to coach.

Kelly is the winningest active coach in college football with 323 victories, but he didn’t win enough big games at LSU to last very long. In a twist of irony, it was a night game at Death Valley that spelled the end for Kelly at LSU, despite the fact that Kelly was 20-2 in night games at Tiger Stadium during his tenure.
