Bryan Harsin said the decision to choose TJ Finley as Auburn’s starting quarterback goes back to January and the early offseason program. The Auburn coach said Finley has a great grasp on the offense.
Harsin explained his thoughts during a segment on “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX out of Birmingham, Alabama.
“He has a really good understanding of what we’re trying to do offensively,” Harsin said. “So just the operation piece is something that stood out, he’s got a good command of that, is able to operate from the sideline into the huddle or on the field, whatever it is we’re doing, so that helps. And then fundamentally, he’s gotten better as a thrower, as a decision maker. That’s the one thing from last year to this year, amazingly enough people get better. And Auburn quarterbacks improve and they get better, and he’s a guy that’s done that. He’s taken this offseason and worked very hard to be a better player, have a better understanding and improve his mechanics.”
Harsin said all of that showed up over the summer and in fall camp, and that’s the ultimate reason why he’s the starting quarterback.
“I’m really proud of TJ, I’m proud of how he’s handled himself, going through this competition, and I’m excited to get him out there this week and let him play the majority of reps and let him get our game plan put together, so we can go out there and play some good football on Saturday,” Harsin said.
