Tennessee suffered another bad loss, the latest coming at the hands of Kentucky after a last-ditch Hail Mary came up short in a 29-26 game in Lexington. With the pressure mounting on Jones and many long-suffering Vol fans campaigning to empty Neyland Stadium for the Southern Miss game, it’s a sad state of affairs on Rocky Top right now.

Jones spoke Wednesday during the SEC Coaches Teleconference.

Here’s a summary of what the Tennessee coach had to say:

  • Opening statement: “Playing a very, very good and talented Southern Miss team that’s 5-3. The RB Smith is averaging over 100 yards a game. Defensively, they are No. 9 in the red zone. Top 30 in the nation in total defense.”
  • Were you aware of any concussion Brett Kendrick had against Kentucky? “Not sure if you saw but our AD John Currie released a statement this morning. We would never, ever knowingly put an athlete in harms way. I have no say in these decisions. The SEC has an independent examiner at each game.”
  • Are the expectations in the SEC different than other places you’ve coached? “I don’t think they match the expectations you place on yourself. When you look at the passionate fan bases and the resources, it’s a challenge week in and week out.”
