Cam Ward, ever the escape artist, added to his highlight reel in the opening minutes of Saturday’s Week 10 matchup with Duke.

The Miami quarterback took a first-and-10 snap from the Duke 34-yard-line and almost immediately had pressure in his face. He tried to step up, saw an avenue close down quickly and then circled back to escape to his right. Ward found some green grass, set his feet, and fired to the endzone.

Duke safety Trey Moore was waiting and tipped the ball away from Miami wideout Jacolby Georgia. But Xavier Restrepo was waiting right behind the action and was able to react in a split-second to catch the redirect for a touchdown.

The score put Miami up 7-0. It gave Restrepo his seventh receiving touchdown of the season and extended Ward’s lead as the ACC’s leading touchdown passer. Ward entered Saturday’s matchup with 24 touchdown passes on the season.

Since the Hurricanes beat Florida in Week 1, Ward has been a fixture in the Heisman Trophy conversation. If he makes it to New York City as a finalist, you can expect Saturday’s opening touchdown will make the cut for the highlight reel.

Miami and Duke are playing on ABC. The fifth-ranked ‘Canes are looking to keep their unbeaten run going.
