Carnage in college football leads to AP top 25 teams finishing with losing record in Week 9

It seems like there’s one week every year in college football where chaos reigns, and that was this week in 2018.

Yes, Saturday (and Thursday and Friday) was a rough day for ranked squads, who finished with a losing record overall this weekend.

Several of the top-10 teams were off, but down around No. 15 and beyond is where the real carnage starts to take place, as you can see in the recap below:

  1. Alabama — OFF
  2. Clemson — Win 59-10 at Florida State
  3. Notre Dame — Win 44-22 at Navy
  4. LSU — OFF
  5. Michigan — OFF
  6. Texas — Loss 38-35 at Oklahoma State
  7. Georgia — Win 36-17 vs. Florida
  8. Oklahoma — Win 51-14 vs. Kansas State
  9. Florida — Loss 36-17 vs. Georgia
  10. UCF — OFF
  11. Ohio State — OFF
  12. Kentucky — Win 15-14 at Mizzou
  13. West Virginia — Win 58-14 vs. Baylor
  14. Washington State — Win 41-38 at Stanford
  15. Washington — Loss 12-10 at Cal
  16. Texas A&M — Loss 28-13 at Mississippi State
  17. Penn State — Win 30-24 vs. Iowa
  18. Iowa — Loss 30-24 at Penn State
  19. Oregon — Loss 44-15 at Arizona
  20. Wisconsin — Loss 31-17 at Northwestern
  21. USF — Loss 57-36 at Houston
  22. NC State — Loss 51-41 at Syracuse
  23. Utah — Win 41-10 vs. UCLA
  24. Stanford — Loss 41-38 vs. Washington State
  25. Appalachian State — Loss 34-14 at Georgia Southern

That adds up to a surprising 9-11 record for top-25 teams this weekend, with only a 6-8 mark against unranked teams.

Interestingly, every single top-25 loss either came on the road or at a neutral site. That just goes to show how difficult it is to win away from home in college football.

Will Week 10 provide more carnage? We know at least one top-5 team will lose since Alabama and LSU play each other.
