COVID postponements and cancelations have many fans wondering about the college football postseason schedule.

The SEC already had to do one round of schedule shuffling once after Florida’s October outbreak. The conference is currently in a tight spot as now both Alabama and Florida have games to makeup with LSU. The SEC’s built-in makeup date is Dec. 12. UF-LSU was rescheduled to that date in October, making it unclear when Alabama might be able to play before the conference championship game on Dec. 19.

Situations like Alabama-Florida-LSU has led to questions about whether the Dec. 19 SEC Championship Game date will stick. Right now, the conference would only have one other Saturday option, Dec. 26, as the College Football Playoff semifinal games are set for Jan. 1 with the national championship game on Jan. 11.

If the CFP were to reschedule the championship, semifinals and New Year’s Six bowls, the SEC and other conferences would have more flexibility to make up games that could help decide who plays in conference championship games.

Don’t hold your breath, though, for the CFP to reschedule any games proactively. Ralph D. Russo of the Associated Press shared that the CFP will only reschedule games (or move to different sites) if they are “forced.”

“From talking to some folks here is best way to sum up whether the College Football Playoff will move dates or locations. Only if forced,” Russo tweeted. “Not pushing back to create a longer regular season. Not switching sites unless there becomes a problem with using the sites it has. For now.”

Hopefully, the conference championship games CFP games are able to be held as scheduled.
