Much of the focus College Football Playoff race is on the 5 undefeated teams from Power 5 conferences. In the first 9 seasons of the CFP, at least one 1-loss team has made the final 4 every time.
As expected, Oregon is the top 1-loss team in the initial College Football Playoff top 25, checking in at No. 6. The selection committee had some sorting to do when it came to which team to rank behind the Ducks.
The committee ultimately settled on an order of Texas, Alabama and Oklahoma for Nos. 7-9. Committee chair Boo Corrigan was asked about how Texas came out on top despite having lost to Oklahoma.
“A wonderful win by Oklahoma, last-second drive to win this game,” Corrigan said on a conference call with reporters. “When you factor in a 2-loss Kansas team this past weekend, getting the win over Oklahoma, Kansas with the 2 losses to Texas and Oklahoma State, while they continue to improve and play better, body of work, if you will, looking at this, Texas over Alabama, winning there in Tuscaloosa, similar to Texas-Oklahoma but then add in the factor that Oklahoma lost that game to Kansas as well as a close game with UCF. But primarily the loss to Kansas.”
Undefeated teams will be in the spotlight every Tuesday, but how the 1-loss teams are ranked will be interesting to follow. Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma are all facing top 25 teams in Week 10.
