CFP Executive Director: ‘Significant gap’ between Alabama, every other team
The College Football Playoff selection committee didn’t need much time to determine which team would be No. 1 in its initial rankings.
Alabama took the top spot in the debut rankings revealed Tuesday, to the surprise of no one who has been paying attention to this college football season. In a Thursday radio interview, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock explained the committee’s approach to ranking the Crimson Tide.
“Based on what’s happened so far this season, clearly, Alabama is such a complete team,” Hancock told WNSP-FM 105.5. “There was a significant gap between Alabama (and the rest of the teams).”
That has been abundantly clear in the Crimson Tide’s on-the-field product.
Alabama has won all eight of its game, including a decisive victory against No. 4 Texas A&M. Nick Saban’s squad has outscored opponents by 29 points per game, and Ole Miss has been the only team to play the Crimson Tide to single digits.
“Clearly, at this point in the season, Alabama has firmly established itself No. 1,” Hancock said. “Alabama is a complete team on both sides of the ball. Tremendous athletes on defense. They are very well coached.”
The Crimson Tide will try to maintain that status when it faces No. 13 LSU at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday in Baton Rouge.
