Chad Morris reveals Arkansas QBs may have missed an opportunity to win him over
Arkansas’ most recent practice wasn’t up to Chad Morris’ standard on Tuesday, and he made that clear to his team via his latest media availability. The team’s practice coincided with the start of fall classes in Fayetteville, which Morris suggested was partly to blame for the team’s effort, or lack thereof, on the practice field.
The Razorback coach came out a bit fiery when meeting with the local media and opened by questioning the effort of his team following practice.
“I thought we got some decent work in, nothing to our standard,” Morris said. “I’ve very disappointed in that but that happens at times, and our guys are going to respond as they always do.”
While it’s unclear what he saw that made him so displeased with his team as training camp is coming to a close in Fayetteville, when Morris was asked about the latest with the team’s quarterback competition, he indicated that he was hoping for a leader to emerge under center.
Here’s what Morris had to say when asked about the ongoing QB competition. Based on his response, it would appear both Ty Storey and Cole Kelley missed an opportunity to separate from each other on the practice field.
“Each one continues to bring different things, good and bad. Consistency is the key we are looking for right here, but we are really no further ahead right now then we were Saturday,” Morris continued. “I thought today’s practice — I was really hoping that one of them would really pick the energy level up and really take over a little bit more, but that didn’t happen like I wanted it to but that’s okay. It’s a great teaching moment.”
It could be argued that Morris is already prepared to play both quarterbacks this season and let them battle it out during the season, something he suggested recently during an appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show, but it seems clear he would have liked to see one of his signal callers display some leadership on the practice field this week with the season so close.
If you missed Morris’ appearance on the program, here’s what he had to say to Finebaum.
“We are looking for that guy to really just take a lead and take this thing over and make it clear cut,” the Arkansas coach said. “Both of these guys have been competing against each other, and we’ve had to have that guy that just pulls away. We will look to name someone toward the end of the week, first of next week.”
If a quarterback has failed to do what it takes to seize the job by now, it would appear that’s not going to happen by the time the Razorbacks kickoff against Eastern Illinois in just over a week.
