Chris Jones is back in the fold for the Kansas City Chiefs, as the team announced that they and the star defensive tackle have come to terms on a 1-year deal.
Jones was in the last year of a 4-year contract with an average annual value of $20 million. He missed all of preseason and the Chiefs’ Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday. Per Adam Schefter, the new deal includes “incentives…that would allow him to earn more than the $19.5 million he was scheduled to make this season under his old contract”.
Since being taken out of Mississippi State in the 2nd round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the 29-year-old Jones has proven his value to the Chiefs. In 2022, he recorded 15.5 sacks, tied for a career-high. He has appeared in the last 4 Pro Bowls, being named a 1st-team All-Pro last season for the 1st time. Jones was also a key part of the Chiefs’ championship teams in the 2019 and 2022 seasons.
With a short-term deal now signed, it sets Jones up for a massive payday when he signs an expected long-term extension.
