Clemson fell to Georgia Tech 24-21on Saturday afternoon.
It’s Clemson’s second loss of the season. The Tigers fell behind 13-0 in this game, but fought back and led by 1 point in this game in the second half. After Georgia Tech scored a go-ahead touchdown to go up 7, Clemson responded with a game-tying drive of its own.
That left Georgia Tech a little over 3 minutes to work with to get into field goal range. Led by quarterback Haynes King, that’s exactly what the Yellow Jackets did.
Here’s a look at the game-winning 55-yard kick from Georgia Tech’s Aidan Birr:
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is likely to take some criticism for how this game unfolded. Rather than use his timeouts in the final minute to ensure the Tigers would get another possession, he allowed the clock to wind down. Birr made the kick at the buzzer while Clemson went home with a 1-2 record and 2 unused timeouts.
This is a devastating loss for Clemson’s ACC hopes and College Football Playoff chances. The Tigers would now likely need to run the table in order to earn an at-large spot in the CFP this season.
For Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets are now 3-0 on the season and now have power-conference wins over Clemson and Colorado. Led by Brent Key, the Yellow Jackets could end up as stealth contenders in the ACC this year.
