College football fans troll Miami, Virginia after incredibly ugly 4OT game

Miami and Virginia didn’t exactly play the game of the year on Saturday.

Both Mario Cristobal and Tony Elliott have been under fire during the 1st years of their respective tenures. Cristobal was 35-13 in 4 seasons at Oregon, but has seen the Hurricanes fail to gain much traction despite high expectations heading into the season. Elliott, after over a decade on Dabo Swinney’s staff at Clemson, is hoping to get the Cavaliers to their first bowl since 2019 after taking over for Bronco Mendenhall in Charlottesville.

And the Canes held on for a 14-12, 4-overtime win on Saturday against the Cavs. The 2 teams combined for just under 600 yards of total offense but were a combined 10-of-33 on 3rd down. It was a 3-0 Miami lead at halftime before Virgnia tacked on a tying field goal in the 3rd. The 2 teams traded field goals in the 4th to send the game into overtime. (That’s not to mention the 14 combined punts.)

Finally, after 4 overtimes, the Canes prevailed, with both teams held to field goals over the 1st 2 extra sessions to tie it at 12. After neither team converted their 2-point conversions in the 3rd overtime, Jake Garcia cashed in on Miami’s 2-point effort in the 4th OT.

Of course, the offensive slog caught plenty of attention on social media, as you can see below:
