College Football Playoff debates will intensify Tuesday night when the selection committee reveals the first rankings set of the 2023 season. We have finally arrived.
The SEC is expected to have at least two teams in the top 10 of the initial rankings.
The lowest a team has ever been ranked in the initial CFP ranking and still made the playoff was No. 16 Ohio State in 2014. Oklahoma debuted at No. 15 the following season and made the CFP. No other team in the seven years since has made the field after starting outside the top 10 in the initial rankings.
Where will the 8-0 Georgia Bulldogs land? The two-time defending national champions have held the No. 1 spot in the AP poll for the entirety of the season, but the College Football Playoff selection committee isn’t beholden to the AP poll. Does Georgia have the résumé in the country so far this season? That will certainly be discussed during Tuesday night’s show on ESPN.
This year’s rankings reveal will take place on ESPN each week going forward. The full schedule for the rest of the year is below:
- CFP rankings release No. 1 — Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 7-8 p.m. ET
- CFP rankings release No. 2 — Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 7-8 p.m. ET
- CFP rankings release No. 3 — Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 9-9:30 p.m. ET (approximate)
- CFP rankings release No. 4 — Tuesday, Nov. 21 from 7-8 p.m. ET
- CFP rankings release No. 5 — Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 7-7:30 p.m. ET
- College Football Playoff Selection Sunday — Sunday, Dec. 3 from noon-4 p.m. ET
(The third rankings reveal on Nov. 14 is scheduled to take place after the first game of a double-header at the State Farm Champions Classic. The approximate start time for the show is 9 p.m. ET.)
