Before the 2018 season kicked off, it was widely presumed that LSU coach Ed Orgeron was or either would find himself on the “hot seat.” Entering Week 5, it looks like Orgeron may be leading top-five team.

The biggest almost upset of a wild Week 4 comes courtesy of Army and No. 5 Oklahoma. The Sooners needed overtime to come away with a 28-21 win. Associated Press Top 25 voters are sometimes reluctant to ding a team for winning, but considering LSU’s resume (wins over No. 8 Miami in Week 1 and No. 7 Auburn in Week 3), it seems hard to keep OU above the Bayou Bengals after Lincoln Riley’s team barely beat unranked Army.

Granted, LSU’s 38-21 over Louisiana Tech was closer than the final score indicates. But will many AP voters know? It’s not like LSU-La Tech was prime viewing. Oklahoma’s almost loss was the buzz of Twitter much of the night.

Virginia Tech certainly wishes Oklahoma had lost. The No. 13 Hokies will fall, potentially out of the rankings altogether, for losing to Old Dominion, a Conference USA team that entered the game 0-3. Considering Virginia Tech’s Week 1 win over then-No. 19 FSU is looking less impressive and Justin Fuente’s squad did not play in Week 3 due to Hurricane Florence, it would take some mental gymnastics for voters to justify keeping the Hokies among the top 25.

It was a rough Saturday for the bottom half of the Top 25. Also falling were No. 14 Mississippi State to Kentucky 7-28, No. 15 Oklahoma State to Texas Tech 17-41, No. 17 TCU to Texas 16-31, No. 20 Oregon to Stanford 31-38, No. 22 Texas A&M to No. 1 Alabama 23-45 and No. 23 Boston College to Purdue 13-30.
