You might call it the Mullet Bowl, or the Teal Turf Tussle, but make no mistake, this afternoon, bowl season begins thanks to Appalachian State and North Texas in the first Myrtle Beach Bowl. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The Mountaineers (8-3) and the Mean Green (4-5) will play at the campus of Coastal Carolina in the first NCAA-sanctioned bowl game in the state of South Carolina. App State comes from the Sun Belt Conference, while the Mean Green hail from Conference USA.
North Texas is coached by former North Carolina assistant Seth Littrell, and it’s dealing with the postseason opt-out from star receiver Jaelon Darden, who made 74 catches for 1,190 yards and an FBS-leading 19 touchdown receptions.
App State coach Shawn Clark is ready for kickoff.
“We’re really excited to get down here to Conway and play a bowl game,” Clark said, per the school’s preview of the game. “We came here to win championships, and our goals are in front of us. Our players are excited.”
The ESPN broadcast will also have a different flavor.
Marty Smith and Ryan McGee, who host “Marty and McGee” on the SEC Network on Wednesday evenings during the football season, and a similar program on ESPN Radio on Saturday mornings, will call the inaugural game.
