On Monday night, Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason likely saw one of those Twitter messages that SEC coaches dread floating across their timelines.

Lamont Atkins, a three-star RB out of Burke, Va., posted a note explaining that he was decommitting from Vanderbilt and reopening his recruitment:

It’s tough news for Mason, as it was his only reported verbal commitment for the 2017 recruiting class to date.

Atkins, who originally committed to Vanderbilt back in November, doesn’t indicate that the Commodores are completely out of the picture, but Mason’s staff will certainly begin to make alternate plans.

Rated as the nation’s No. 19 all-purpose back in the 247Sports composite rankings, Atkins has offers from Northwestern and Virginia, among others.

There are still more than 10 months until National Signing Day, but it would do the Commodores recruiting class some good to receive a couple of commitments soon, if for nothing other than a little moment on the recruiting trail.
