While Michigan awaits a final decision from the NCAA related to a sign-stealing scandal enacted in large part by Connor Stalions, the saga that played out across the 2023 season has reportedly led to a Notice of Allegations for Central Michigan.
When news of the sign-stealing scandal broke in 2023, videos of an early-season meeting between Michigan State and Central Michigan surfaced with an individual resembling Stalions on the sidelines of the Chippewas, dressed in CMU gear. Former Florida head coach Jim McElwain, then the head coach at CMU, addressed the matter but said the program was “totally unaware” of Stalions’ presence at the game.
According to Tony Garcia with the Detroit Free Press, that incident has resulted in CMU receiving an NOA on the matter. According to documents obtained by Garcia, the NOA was sent to CMU on June 27, and the program now has a 90-day window to respond to the allegations.
The investigation was originally launched in October of 2023, meaning it took roughly 21 months to reach this point in the process. In that time frame, Michigan rolled to an undefeated 2023 season and captured the national title, all while Jim Harbaugh was suspended for a total of 6 games during the 2023 season.

Entering the 2025 season, Michigan has suspended 2nd-year head coach Sherrone Moore for 2 games. A key assistant under Harbaugh for years, Moore’s suspension is related to the investigation after Stalions’ identity went public, in hopes of appeasing the NCAA from further severe punishment in the matter.
Now, we’ll see how the situation develops for CMU, simply from Stalions’ one-game appearance on the sideline.
