The first question Dan Mullen was asked Thursday revolved around Urban Meyer’s situation at Ohio State, and one of the next questions pertained to the Gators’ QB competition.

True freshman Emory Jones joins returners Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask to battle for the starting position during fall camp. Franks and Jones are probably the top two at this point, but anything can happen in fall camp.

Mullen was asked about a timeline on naming a starter.

“I get this question from my wife,” Mullen joked. “You asked if Megan is involved in the program. I get this question from her quite a bit, too … I would love to get that done. That’s something to me that I want to feel comfortable with. I don’t have a timetable because if I give myself a specific timetable, I don’t know when we’re going to be ready to make that decision. I hope it’s a clear-cut decision, that you know, this person is going to give us the best opportunity to win games and lead our program into the future. I also have to make sure that we have one that I feel good as the starter but that whoever our backup is also one play away from being the starter.

“I’d love to give you a timetable; I’d love to say, ‘On this date we’re going to know.’ I’ve learned through the years not to do that.”

Mullen was later asked specifically about QB Feleipe Franks and his ability.

“He has a tremendous skill-set,” Mullen said. “He has the ability to make big plays. He has great athletic ability — has a really strong arm … Does Feleipe have the skill-set to do it? Absolutely, because he can make spectacular plays. Can he make non-spectacular plays (check down on fourth WR) on a consistent basis is going to be a big growing curve for him moving forward.”

It’ll be interesting to see which QB will start game one for the Gators.
