He’s no Dak Prescott, but Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has put up some crazy numbers after the last few weeks.
Against Samford and then-No. 4 Texas A&M, the sophomore completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 626 yards and seven touchdowns. He added 301 yards and four scores on the ground over that stretch, proving to be the dual-threat quarterback coach Dan Mullen covets.
But for Mullen, what has impressed him most about Fitzgerald is that he’s “not making the same mistakes.”
“I’ve seen him come along nicely,” Mullen said during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference. “First time getting real reps, seeing him progressing. He’s developing nicely.”
The coach said Fitzgerald’s best attribute is his strong arm, which he can make total use of even when on the run. But when it comes to being a pocket passer, Mullen sees some potential in the sophomore.
“It’s hard to develop some guys into a drop back passer,” he said. “That’s going to take time, but he has the ability.”
Fitzgerald will face one of the nation’s top defenses when the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-3) travel to face No. 1 Alabama (9-0, 6-0) at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.
