Danny Kanell shot down any inclination that Miami‘s College Football Playoff hopes are over after a loss to Louisville — barring an eventual ACC championship victory.
“I’ve already seen some people trying to say that Miami’s done now unless they win the ACC Championship. That could not be further from the truth. Miami had a game to play with,” Kanell said.
The CBS Sports analyst noted the Hurricanes’ wins to that point, including those against USF and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish opened the season 0-2 but are on a four-game winning streak.
In Kanell’s view, if Miami runs the table and ends up raising the ACC trophy, “they’re a lock” to make the 12-team field. But there could be a path to the Playoff for the Canes if they end up losing the ACC Championship Game, he added.
“The team that should be worried is Notre Dame. Because in that scenario, if Miami does lose in the ACC title (game) and drops to 11-2, and Notre Dame runs the table in their 10-2, sorry, Notre Dame, you lost the head-to-head. You’re out.”
Miami hosts Stanford next before traveling to SMU. That’s followed by home games against Syracuse and NC State before the Canes close out on the road against Virginia Tech and Pitt.
