Danny Kanell’s weekly top-12 rankings looks slightly different this Sunday than it did a week ago. That’s what happens after one of the craziest college football Saturdays in some time happens.

It works out that the CBS Sports college football analyst puts a team at the top that didn’t even play in Week 6 — Texas, which had a bye as it gets ready for the Week 7 Red River Rivalry showdown with Oklahoma. The Longhorns are Kanell’s No. 1 team through 6 topsy-turvy weeks in college football.

Kanell has Ohio State at No. 2 after the Buckeyes took care of Iowa, 35-7. Yes, Ohio State started slow on Saturday, but the Buckeyes got going in the 2nd half and put away the offensively challenged Hawkeyes. At No. 3, Kanell has Miami, which staged a frantic 4th-quarter rally late Saturday night in Berkeley to take down stubborn Cal, 39-38.

Oregon is at No. 4 on Kanell’s list after the Ducks methodically beat Michigan State, 31-10, in a Friday night game in Eugene. Kanell has Penn State at No. 5 after the Nittany Lions stayed unbeaten with an ugly win over UCLA. Then things get a little weird on Kanell’s rankings, as he puts BYU at No. 6 after the 5-0 Cougars had a bye in Week 6.

Kanell has Indiana, one of college football’s early-season darlings, at No. 7, after the Hoosiers took care of Northwestern on the road on Saturday to stay undefeated. Iowa State follows at No. 8 after the Cyclones beat Baylor to stay unbeaten, and then Kanell has Pitt at No. 9 after the Panthers beat North Carolina for its 1st 5-0 start since 1991.

SMU follows at No. 10 after the Mustangs upset Louisville on Saturday to get to 5-1. Then there’s Georgia all the way at No. 11 after the Bulldogs struggled early in an eventual 31-13 win over Auburn in Athens. Clemson completes Kanell’s rankings at No. 12 after the Tigers won easily at Florida State to get to 4-1.

It’s sort of a strange list of teams in Kanell’s rankings, but that makes sense, because so far it’s been a strange college football season through 6 weeks.
