College football analysts Greg McElroy and David Pollack are both targeting the same guy if they had the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, today. And according to McElroy, the decision isn’t really all that difficult.
It’s Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer.
As Pollack and McElroy mention above, Mateer has been excellent for the Sooners through the first few weeks of the 2025 season. The former Washington State quarterback is joined in Norman by former OC Ben Arbuckle, streamlining the transition from weaker competition to an SEC schedule. So far this year Mateer has totaled 944 passing yards with 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions with 161 rushing yards and 4 rushing touchdowns.
Mateer was solid against a good Michigan defense in Week 2 and accounted for 2 touchdowns, 1 rushing and 1 passing. His dual-threat nature has transformed the Oklahoma offense, taking a unit that was among the worst passing offenses in the SEC last season into one of 6 SEC offenses averaging more than 300 passing yards per game so far in 2025.
Of course, Mateer has still yet to face an SEC defense with the Sooners, and his efficiency against Michigan took a hit compared to games against Illinois State and Temple. How effective will he be Saturday afternoon when former Sooners QB Jackson Arnold and the Auburn Tigers come to town?
Week 4’s matchup between the Sooners and Tigers kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
