Deebo Samuel is closing in on making NFL history, ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out Sunday morning. Samuel could become the first wide receiver to lead his team in rushing touchdowns since the NFL merger in 1970.

Samuel, in his third year as a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, has 6 rushing TDs during the 2021 season. San Francisco’s starting running back, Elijah Mitchell, has 5 rushing scores. Mitchell will miss Saturday’s San Francisco-Atlanta game due to a concussion.

Samuel already accomplished one first as a runner. The former South Carolina standout is the first wide receiver in the Super Bowl era (1966) to score a rushing touchdown in 4 consecutive games. Samuel has rushed for 5 TDs in his 27 carries over the last 4 games.

We’ll see if he makes it 5 games in a row. Sunday’s game is set for 4:05 p.m. ET, on CBS.
