Deion Sanders to Heisman voters: ‘Hatred for me’ shouldn’t hurt Travis Hunter

Deion Sanders said after Saturday’s win over Utah that Travis Hunter deserves the Heisman Trophy and implored voters not to let any personal feelings about him influence their vote.

Since taking over at Jackson State, Sanders has been a disruptor in the industry. When he took over Colorado, the Buffs’ hot start and subsequent coverage turned them into a team many across the country loved to hate. This season, the noise has tamped down while the success has gone through the roof.

In a 49-24 win over Utah on Saturday, Colorado won its eighth game of the season and moved one step closer to the Big 12 Championship Game.

Utah had won 7 straight over the Buffs. Colorado had won 8 regular-season games just once in the last 20 years. As the Buffs wrapped up their eighth of the season, fans inside Folsom Field displayed a “HE12MAN” banner in support of Hunter.

The 2-way star finished with 3 tackles, an interception, a 5-yard rushing touchdown, and 5 receptions for 55 yards.

At the time of publication, Hunter was -240 at FanDuel to win the Heisman — the overwhelming favorite. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel are the only other players with odds shorter than +1000.

Sanders was asked after the game what his message would be to undecided voters.

“If they can’t see, they can’t see and it is what it is. Travis is who he is,” Sanders said. “It’s supposed to go to the best college football player. I think that’s been a wrap since, what, Week 2?

“We ain’t petitioning for nobody. We ain’t doing that. We’ve got a wonderful display of cameras here and I think we’re on national TV every week. If they can’t see it, that’s a problem. Don’t allow their hatred for me to interfere with our kids’ success. … Give the kids what they deserve, man.”

Hunter and the Buffs hit the road next week to face Kansas. They close out the regular season with a home game against Oklahoma State.
