DeVonta Smith has another piece of hardware recognizing him as the best player in college football. The Alabama wide receiver won the Maxwell Award Thursday night during ESPN’s College Football Awards show.
The award, traditionally handed out ahead of the Heisman Trophy, is the Maxwell Football Club’s award for the top player in college football.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Smith had an outstanding senior season making 105 catches for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns. He had a career-best 231 yards against LSU on Dec. 5, one of 2 games where he broke the 200-yard receiving mark. He most recently led No. 1 Alabama to the College Football Playoff championship game with a win over Notre Dame in the semifinals. He was named the 2020 SEC Offensive Player of the Year while leading Alabama to the SEC title and the top seed in the CFP.
