DeVonta Smith is getting tons of buzz as a Heisman Trophy candidate heading into the final weekend of voting for the most prominent college football award.
Smith, however, wasn’t getting a lot of Heisman talk until the past few weeks. Heisman winner Tim Tebow, now an analyst for the SEC Network, shared his theory as to why Smith was a relative late entrant into the race for the stiff-arm trophy.
“One of DeVonta’s biggest knocks is that he makes it look too easy,” Tebow said during an appearance on “The Paul Finebaum Show.” “He really does. I think if he made it look harder, he’d get even more respect this year. He makes everything look so easy, and that’s why right now he finally emerged in the Heisman watch.”
Smith leads the nation with 1,327 receiving yards. His 83 receptions and 15 touchdowns are second-best in the nation behind Elijah Moore (86 catches) and Jaelon Darden (19 TDs).
Smith’s Heisman campaign should get a big boost on Saturday night against a Florida defense that has struggled mightily against the pass.
