Kentucky has seen four players enter the NCAA transfer portal in a very short period of time as four Wildcats have entered the database in under a week’s time.

The first Wildcat to enter the portal came on Friday as redshirt freshman Cavon Butler decided to enter the portal, which was followed by sophomore defensive end Davoan Hawkins over the weekend. Those decisions were followed by redshirt sophomore receiver B.J. Alexander on Monday.

Now comes news that redshirt senior fullback/tight end Drew Schlegel has entered the portal after he appeared in 24 games for Kentucky the previous two seasons. News of Schlegel’s decision to enter the portal was first reported by Derek Terry of 247Sports.

Mark Stoops’ program is facing a scholarship crunch after signing 22 prospects in the 2020 recruiting cycle and adding transfer quarterback Joey Gatewood so some roster attrition was expected this offseason but losing four players to the portal in a few days span is very unusual, outside of a head coaching change.

Schlegel was also a walk-on so his decision doesn’t alter Kentucky’s scholarship limit heading into the 2020 season.

As always, it should be noted that just because a player enters the NCAA transfer portal, that does not mean they can’t return to their school.
