Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni updates injury status of rookie WR DeVonta Smith

NFL fans will be keeping an eye on Philadelphia Eagles rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith after an exceptional college career at Alabama that ended with a national championship and a Heisman Trophy. But his time in his first-ever training camp has been limited due to a knee sprain suffered in early August, leaving him out of Philadelphia’s first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.
On Saturday, in a news conference, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni provided an update on the status of Smith, declaring him “day-to-day” while noting that he wasn’t sure about Smith’s availability for their next preseason game against the New England Patriots on Aug. 19 at Lincoln Financial Field.
“I don’t want to put a timetable as far as if he’ll be ready for Thursday,” Sirianni said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I don’t know yet. So, he’s working hard and working hard to get back, and our trainers and our strength staff is doing a great job of bringing him back. So, he’s day to day and [I] look forward to seeing him out there in practice soon.”
Smith, the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, made 117 catches for 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns at Alabama in 2020, his yardage and touchdown total the most in a single season in SEC history. He also holds the SEC’s career record for receiving yardage and receiving touchdowns.
