Philadelphia Eagles rookie DeVonta Smith has hit a bump to start his NFL career just as training camp gets underway.

The Eagles have announced that Smith has a knee sprain, and the team referred to his status as “week to week,” per Pro Football Talk. Smith’s status for the Aug. 12 preseason opener is unknown, as is his availability for the balance of the preseason. The Eagles did not appear to be concerned for his longer term health.

The Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver at Alabama last year, Smith went to the Eagles with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the Eagles are counting on him to emerge as their No. 1 receiver as a rookie.

Smith last season won the Heisman Trophy and became the first wide receiver to win the prestigious award since Desmond Howard in 1991. In his Alabama career, Smith caught 235 passes for 3,965 yards and 46 touchdowns. Smith holds the SEC records for single-season and career receiving yards and single-season and career touchdown receptions.

He also was a unanimous All-American and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year as Alabama won the CFP national championship last season.
