When Matt Canada joined LSU’s staff, he told coach Ed Orgeron that his system could work with either a pro-style quarterback or a dual-threat quarterback. Orgeron saw that as an opportunity to hold an open quarterback competition for both the team’s pro-style and dual-threat quarterbacks.

“Here’s what we’re going to do, we’re going to make a quarterback competition in spring, and I want every quarterback to have a chance to show you his skill sets and see if you like him,” Orgeron said. “And we did that throughout the spring. We let every quarterback compete. Danny [Etling] came out as the best quarterback running his system. Lowell Narcisse did a great job. Lindsey Scott did a great job. Justin McMillan did a great job.”

Orgeron’s Media Day comments were much more positive than in April, when he said after the spring game, “Nobody has earned the starting spot and you saw that tonight. If we had to name a starter tonight, it is not a clear-cut winner.” In fall camp, incoming freshman Myles Brennan, a 4-star prospect rated the No. 6 pro-style quarterback, will enter the competition. Orgeron said that his recruitment of Brennan is one of the reasons that the competition remains open, though a favorite has emerged.

“Now, we recruited Myles Brennan who I told I was going to give him a chance to earn the starting spot as quarterback at LSU,” Orgeron said. “So there’s still a quarterback competition going into fall camp, but right now, if we were to play, Danny would be our starter.”

Orgeron also assured everyone that Etling, the incumbent starter, approves of having to earn that starting spot for 2017.

“And by the way, Danny loves the competition. He loves that we made it a competition. Actually, he thrives in it.
