Ed Orgeron’s frustrations came to a head in the first half with another DeVonta Smith touchdown, and sideline video caught Orgeron going ballistic and slamming his headset in disgust.
It’s been a frustrating year for Orgeron and the Tigers, and Saturday night’s blowout loss to Alabama seemed to be the climax of an otherwise forgettable season. Alabama scored 5 touchdowns on its first 5 possessions.
Following another DeVonta Smith touchdown, Orgeron slammed his headset in disgust and was clearly dissatisfied with his defense’s inability to stop Alabama’s potent offense.
The LSU head coach was asked about the incident after the game, and Orgeron described the frustration of trying to defend Smith.
“Our plan was, for most of the game, double team him. That was one of his times that we weren’t,” Orgeron said. “Then we got beat one on one. It’s nobody’s fault. We went into the game to stop No. 6 and you have to give them credit. Sometimes we had him doubled and he made some big plays. It was just frustrating seeing a player have 300 yards in the first half.”
